Taraweeh is the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad ﷺ.
Aisha, the mother of the faithful believers (May Allah be pleased with her) narrates (in Sahih Bukhari 1129):
One night Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) offered the prayer in the Mosque and the people followed him. The next night he also offered the prayer and too many people gathered. On the third and the fourth nights more people gathered, but Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not come out to them. In the morning he said, "I saw what you were doing and nothing but the fear that it (i.e. the prayer) might be enjoined on you, stopped me from coming to you." And that happened in the month of Ramadan. [Sahi Bukhari 1129]
Countless rewards from Allah
Since Taraweeh prayer comes under the category of Qiyam ul Layle (night prayer), its rewards are immense.
A Hadith sheds light on how someone who offers taraweeh with full sincerity will be cleared of all his past sins:
Prophet Mohammad ﷺ said: "Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven." [Sahih Bukhari 37]
