Astaghfirullahal lazi la ilaha illa huwal hayyul qayyumu wa atubu ilaih

Meaning: I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy of worship except Him, The Living, The Eternal, and I repent unto Him

There are countless virtues and benefits of practising this powerful dua as Allah has shed light on the importance of repentance and istighfar in the Quran. Also, several Hadiths talk about why repentance is crucial for man's success both in this world and in akhirah. 

 

What makes this dua so powerful & miraculous

1) Surrender & acceptance: As stated above, this dua is based on istighfar, which means you consciously choose to surrender yourself before God rather than blaming others and complaining, you also sincerely accept your limitations (nobody's perfect except God), errors, negligence and wrongdoing (yes we all make mistakes), and then finally ask God to grant forgiveness. 

2) Powerful attribute of God, Hayyul Qayyum: The second element in this dua is the use of God's one of the most powerful attributes, Hayyul Qayyum. A Hadith says if someone calls upon Allah by using this attribute (Hayyul Qayyum), his duas are answered. 

When you say Hayyul Qayyum, you acknowledge that God is the only entity who does not need any support or influence to exist. He is self-subsisting, meaning He doesn't need anyone to help Him stay alive. He's ever-living, meaning He has no beginning and no end. When we praise God in such lofty and sacred words, God is pleased and forgives us. Although he is not in need of our praises and acknowledgements, it is us who need to acknowledge the truth of God being Self-subsisting and Ever-Living and Most-Forgiving.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Propphet Mohammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever says Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi thrice, his sins will be forgiven even if he had fled from battle”
