The purpose of food is much more than gaining required nutrients to keep our body functioning and alive, as it also binds family, friends and society together. Food also drives economies.

That is why "food having barakah" is something a believer should be concerned about. To get maximum blessings in the food we consume, we must follow the manners and etiquette taught by Prophet ﷺ in the Islamic scripture.

Here are 9 of the most fundamental manners and etiquette everyone of us should learn if we want every meal to be a blessing with unlimited benefits both for our physical and spiritual health.

1) Say Bismillah before meal

"The Messenger of Allah (saw) was eating food with six of His companions when a Bedouin came and ate it all in two bites. The Messengerﷺ said, 'If he had said Bismillah, it (food) would have sufficed you all,'" [narrated Aisha RA, Ibn Maajah 3264]

2) If you forget Bismillah at the start of meal, say this dua

 بِسْمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ‏
Bismillahi awwalahu wa-akhirahu
In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "When anyone of you eats food, let him say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, let him say 'Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu'" [narrated Aishar RA, Ibn Maaja]

3) "Do not eat with your left hand"

Companion Jabir (RA) reported that Prophet Mohammad SAW said, "Do not eat with your left hand because Satan eats with his left hand," [Sunan Ibn Maaja]

3) "Eat from what is in front of you"

Companion Umar Bin Abu Salamah reported that, "I was a boy under the care of Messenger of Allah (SAW) and as my hand used to wander around in the dish, He ﷺ said to me once, 'Mention Allah's name (i.e. say Bismillah), eat with your right hand and eat from what is in front of you.'" [Riyad as Salhin]

4) Don't overeat

Ibn Umar (ra) reported, "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, 'A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in even intestines (eats too much) [Sahi Bukhari 5394]

5) Eat together with others

Companion Wahshi bin Harb (ra) reported: "Some of the Companions of Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, 'We eat but are not satisfied.' Messenger ﷺ said. 'Perhaps you eat separately." The Companions said yes. He ﷺ then said, 'eat together and mention the Name of Allah over your food. It will be blessed for you.'" [Riyad as Salihin 743]

6) If the food drops, pick it up and eat

Companion Jabir (ra) reported Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying: "When anyone of you drops a mouthful (of food), he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan." [Sahi Muslim]

7) Lick your fingers

Bits of leftover food should be licked because they may have the blessing. Companion Abu Huraira (ra) reported Messenger of Allah (SAW) as saying in a Sahi Muslim Hadith: "When anyone of you eats food he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what part of the food sticking to his fingers the blessing lies." [Sahi Muslim]

8) "Show honor to food"

Aisha RA said: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) entered the house and saw a piece of bread that had been thrown (on the floor). He picked it up, wiped it and ate it, and said: 'O Aisha, show honor to the precious (i.e. food) because when the blessing of food leaves from people, it never comes back [Sunan Ibn Maaja]

9) "Use olive oil"

"The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, 'use olive oil in cooking (food) and rubbing (on the body) because it is from a blessed tree,'" [narrated Abdullah Bin Saeed, Ibn Maajah]
