Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi: Meaning, benefits & virtues

Arabic Text

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ العَظِيم


Meaning (English Translation) 

Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him, glory be to Allah the great


In Hadith: Saying it 100 times a day

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says, 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi', one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea,'" [Sahi Bukhari 6405]

Benefits and advantages of uttering these beautiful words are innumerable, which means we can get the most from them. All we have to do is dwell on its meaning, understand deeply what it says and then at the same time express it through our tongue.

Virtues from Hadiths

  • Prophet Mohammad ﷺ said: "There are two statements that are light for the tongue to remember, heavy in the scale and are dear to the Merciful: SubhanAllahi wa bi-hamdihi, SubhanAllahil azeem (Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him, Allah the Greatest is free from imperfection) - Bukhari & Muslim.
  • Prophet Mohammad ﷺ said: "For him who says, 'SubanAllahi wa bihamdihi, a palm tree will be planted in jannah [Tirmidhi]
