The Prophet Muhammad's Umrah (Timeline)

  Anonymous       Sunday, June 27, 2021

After the migration, the Prophet performed four Umrahs. During the month of Dhul Qadah, he performed three of them, adorning himself with Ihram for each one. The other occurred in Dhul Hijjah while he was performing his first and only Hajj.

Abdullah ibn Abbas narrated:

The Messenger of Allah performed Umrah four times: The Umrah of Hudaibiyah, the Umrah to make up for (the one not completed previously), the third from Ji’ranah and the fourth that he did with his Hajj. (bn Majah, Hadith No. 3003)

 Umrah of Hudaibiyah (6 AH)

In the year 6 A.H., the prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions travelled to Makkah to perform the Umrah. Quraysh had denied entry into Hudaibiyah, which was located on the western outskirts of the city. Because of this, the Meccans  came to an agreement known as the Hudaibiyah Treaty, which was intended to prevent bloodshed. Following the agreement, Muslims were required to return to Madinah, but they were given the opportunity to enter Makkah for the purpose of performing Umrah the following year. Following the conclusion of the negotiations, the Muslims offered sacrifices, shaved their heads, and left Ihram before returning to Madinah.

Umrat al-Qada (7 AH)

It had been agreed upon a year earlier that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) would return to Macca and perform Umrah with his companions for three days before returning to Madinah. This happened in 7 A.H and is referred to as the Umrat al-Qada (the completed umrah) or the Umrat al-Qisas ("The Umrah of Retribution").

Umrah from Ji’rana (8 AH)

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) performed Umrah of Ji'rana in 8 AH, when he divided the spoils from the battle of Hunayn. Muharrish Al-Kabi narrated:

The Messenger of Allah left al-Ji’ranah during the night for Umrah, before entering Makkah and performing the pilgrimage. He departed during the same night, reaching al-Ji’ranah by the morning. It was as if he had spent the night there. (Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 935; al-Nasa’i 2864 )

Umrah with Hajj (10 AH)

The prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) performed Umrah in conjunction with Hajj in the year 10 AH. He entered Ihram at the end of Dhul Qadah and performed Umrah in the month of Dhul Hijjah. At the conclusion of this Hajj, the prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) delivered the last sermon which mirrors Islam's fundamental message or peace, equality and justice.
