Key duas & prayers for safe journey and travel

If you are planning to set out on a journey such as a road trip, travelling by train, an air travel or on the sea voyage, you need God's protection through a dua or prayer every step of the way so your whole experience of departure and returning can become a blessing.

As you are leaving your place (home etc) for the journey, you need to recite the below-mentioned supplications.

1) When you start your journey or travel 

This dua should be recited right after you leave your home/place. 

When we put our trust in All-powerful and Infinitely Intelligent Lord, we are ensuring peace, safety and a great traveling experience as now we have handed over our affairs to Him. So, in order to gain the maximum benefits from this supplication, memorize it or recite it by reading every time you leave for your journey.

Now that you have stepped out of your home or place, you will usually use a mode of transportation to start the journey. You need another dua, which is based on Quran, to further ensure protection from God. 

You are probably using a car for your road trip, going to airport to board an airplane for travelling abroad, a ship for sea voyage, or going to get on a train to travel across the country. Again, you need protection with Allah so that these modes of transportation will become a blessing for us.

Detailed prayer for safe return  

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ لَنَا بُعْدَهُ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْحُورِ بَعْدَ الْكُورِ وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ

"O Allah, we seek goodness from you and piety from this journey and (the ability to do) good actions by which You are pleased. O Allah ease this journey for us and make us transverse the road quickly. O Allah, You are our companion in this journey and deputy (guardian) over our household whom we left behind. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of the journey and from seeing bad things, and from a bad return at home and household and from the dua of the oppressed." [Kitabul Askar Li-Nawawi]

2) Dua if you are seeing someone off

If you are bidding farewell to someone, you want them to have the best journey and reach their destination safe and sound by the will of God. 

أَسْتَوْدِعِكُمُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا تَضِيعُ وَدَائِعُهُ

"I leave your responsibility to Allah (leave you in His safe hands) in Whose protection nothing can be lost (destroyed, damaged) when He protects."
