There has been a lot of chatter around whether shab e baraat can be proven from Quran and Hadith or not, but here's what a number of renowned scholars have to say about this heated debate that has been going on among Muslims for ages.
This five-minute short clip features English lectures from famous Islamic scholars on the web. Mufti Menk has out-rightly called Shab e Baraat a bidah - an act that is not instructed or done by Prophet Mohammad Peace Be Upon.
Mufti Menk says the core message of Quran and Prophet Peace Be Upon Him was to teach the mankind how to worship Allah and how to get close to Him and anything other than this core belief is an innovation (bidah).
It should be noted that the term shab e baraat is popular mainly in the sub-continent (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) and a majority of Muslims in places like the US, Canada, UK and Europe, don't use this terminology.
In India and Pakistan, the topic shab e baraat has been at the heart of many sects for years, with scholars coming up with their versions to defend their stance. There is a divided opinion among mainstream sects on shab e baraat being Sunnah of Prophet Peace Be Upon Him and Sahaba (May Allah be pleased with them) or UnIslamic (haraam/bidah/innovation)
