As a Christian or even a Muslim researcher, you are probably wondering what Islam tell us about Jesus Christ Peace Be Upon Him: Was he the son of God or the messenger of God?
Islam does not consider Jesus as the son of God.
In Quran, there are a number of verses that clearly mention that "Jesus is not the son of God".
Surah Al Maeda - Verse 116-117
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah ?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. (Surah Al Maeda - Verse 116)
In this verse, Allah (God) tells us that He will ask Jesus on judgement day about whether he commanded his followers to consider him the son of God. Quran says Jesus will dissociate himself from those who consider him as the son of God. He will also explain to Allah that he had no control over people's opinion about him and their belief after he left the world.

"I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness." (Surah Al Maeda - Verse 117)
